Undead knights on undead horses? Gorgeous Spanish country-side? An ancient monastery? Loads of really bad gore? Yes, It's Amando de Ossorio's classic 1971 shocker, Tombs of the Blind Dead, about...well, about undead knights on undead horses, gorgeous Spanish country-side, an ancient monastery, and loads of really bad gore.

The Slayer (1982)
I don't know. Some chick with a really bad perm--Barbra Streisand bad--has dreamt of a monster for so long, that she believes it's becoming real. A prolific artist, she also dreams of a house and decides to paint it. The woman, her film director husband, and their two friends decide to vacation on a remote island (Georgia's Tybee) and lo! What does the woman see? Exactly--the house.

Absurd (1981)
Also known as Anthropophagus 2, The Monster Hunter and Horrible, Absurd is Italian horror impresario Joe D'Amato's (aka Aristide Massaccesi) unofficial sequel to his 1980 splatter epic, Anthropophagus. You'll recall (or maybe you won't) that the earlier film was about several couples who encounter a rather nasty cannibal on a deserted island. The most infamous scene involves the killer devouring a...well, if you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about.

Jennifer's Body (2009)
"It smells like Thai food in here. Have you two been fucking?"
That's just one example of screenwriter Diablo Cody's whip-crack wit, evident in nearly every frame of Jennifer's Body, a shockingly fun horror movie that will, I'm predicting, become an underrated genre classic.
Megan Fox, showing the first signs of a talented actress here, plays the titular Jennifer, a walking sex bomb ready to explode all over every boy in high school (or is it vice-versa?). Jennifer takes off one night with a local rock band, after the bar they play at burns to the ground. The band has dubious motives, at best, and...

Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954)
Rubber monsters unite!
Say what you will about Creature From the Black Lagoon: seeing this drive-in classic again after twenty years, I was startled and impressed by how technically proficient it really is.
You know the story, of course: scientists discover a prehistoric amphibian alive and well in an Amazonian lagoon that is not so very black and attempt to capture it for study. The "gill-man" becomes enamored with the only female on the expedition (naturally), and tries to steal her away to its remote cave hideaway--surely to talk about things such as the American economy after the end of WWII.

Zombieland (2009)
Splattery good fun from director Ruben Fleischer. Jesse Eisenberg, who has cornered the market on playing quick-witted misfits, teams up with Woody Harrelson on a cross-country road trip--the road being lined with legions of the undead. Along the way they meet up with sisters Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. The siblings (and amateur conwomen) believe there's a west-coast amusement park utterly devoid of zombies. They kidnap the men for their car and set off for the Sunshine State. This is a fun movie, and far gorier than I had anticipated, though the carnage is giddily over-the-top. Harrelson has a lot of fun with his role as the supreme zombie ass-kicker, and Eisenberg is helped along in his survival by a list of neurotic do's and don'ts that pop up on the screen at opportune times. Bill Murray has an absolutely hilarious cameo as himself, which, as it turns out, is maybe not such a great thing after all. Horror fans will love this one.

It's Alive (1974)
John Ryan and Sharon Farrell as a couple that welcome a bouncing baby boy into the world. Unfortunately for them, Farrell took a load of questionably safe pregnancy pills, and the progeny comes bursting into the world as a genetic mutant, complete with fangs and razor-sharp claws. Baby monster goes on the crawl, ripping out throats left and right, as Ryan vacillates between wanting to kill his offspring and protect it from predatory scientists who wish to study it.Sunday, January 31, 2010
April Fool's Day (1986)
Needed a little fun last night. One of the 80's slasher films that got away, and released years after that bubble had burst, April Fool's Day is a nifty little horror-comedy with a twist ending, despite the logic holes you could drive a bus through. The plot is unoriginal: A group of rich college kids gather at the island home of Muffy St. John (the invaluable Deborah Foreman, of Valley Girl fame) and get picked off quickly by an unseen killer.

Paranormal Activity (2009)
At the age of 78, my late grandmother (may she rest in peace) hula-danced at the Elk's Lodge in nothing but a grass skirt and coconut brassiere. That moment, as I'm sure the Benevolent Order would be willing to attest, was more frightening than anything in Paranormal Activity, a somnolent verite-style horror film in the vein of The Blair Witch Project (and Cannibal Holocaust before that).

Blood on Satan's Claw (1971)
An annual favorite of mine since childhood, and one of the better entries in the British witchcraft genre from the late-60's and early-70's.Years after the eradication of witchcraft, a small village sees a resurgence of inexplicable murders. It seems a demon has come to town, hell-bent on possessing the local children. It's up to a local judge to get to the bottom of the nightmare and do away with the unwelcome presence.

The House on Sorority Row (1983)
Question: Is there anything more fun than watching four squeamish sorority girls try to dispose of a dead body? I can't think of anything--unless you consider old ladies falling in the street fun, which I certainly do. The body in question is Mrs. Slater, creepy housemother and all-around whackjob, the victim of a cruel prank involving a gun thought to be loaded with blanks. Before you can say "Canadian tax shelter," the girls are picked off one by one. Did Mrs. Slater survive? Or is someone else behind the murders? Insignificant questions, really, since you'd basically have to be an idiot not to spot the killer five minutes in.

Home Sweet Home (1981)
I only watched the first twenty minutes of this piece of shit, so instead of a review, I thought I'd post the video to "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley. Seriously, I'd rather rickroll you than torture you with details of how Jake "Body by Jake" Steinfeld (!) plays an escaped lunatic who terrorizes a house full of total circus freaks. Grade-Z, bottom-of-the-barrel, bad, bad, bad. Not even worth it for the boy in mime makeup who torments people with his guitar or the girl fond of singing Spanish songs off key.Saturday, January 2, 2010
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)
Poor Sir Henry, suffering the family curse, manifested in the form of a spectral dog. A typical Hammer Film horror production: creepy atmosphere, gothic set-designs, a brazen color palette, and all the uptight British accents one could ever want. I haven't read the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story, but understand this adaptation to be rather loose. Worth a watch for Peter Cushing (as Sherlock Holmes) and Christopher Lee, those genre titans, who, let's face it, could roll around in dog crap for ninety minutes and still be the most interesting thing in the movie. Makes the rounds on Turner Classic Movies every now and then.1959; starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee; directed by Terence Fisher; 87 min; Not Rated; English.

The Bird With the Crystal Plumage (1970)
Jan 1, 2010: It's been a good night. Italian horror impresario Dario Argento's debut film, one that would help shape the giallo genre started, arguably, by Mario Bava nearly a decade before. Tony Musante plays an American in Italy, who becomes embroiled in a series of gruesome murders. Argento, one of the great masters of shot composition, directs in the high style that would soon become his trademark: tracking, crane shots, vibrant colors, the black-gloved-killer and elaborately-staged murder sequences. Bird is less violent than the movies that would eventually gain Argento notoriety (Suspiria; Opera), relying here on suspense, rather than shock. A terrific thriller, worth checking out. (Be warned that the movie is dubbed into English--badly.)1970; starring Tony Musante, Suzy Kendall; directed by Dario Argento; 96 min; Not Rated (for mature audiences); English dubbed.
Onibaba (1965)
My first movie of 2010, and ho-lee shit! War-torn Japan. A destitute mother and her daughter-in-law, with nary a moral fiber between them, murder samurai and sell the belongings for food. Mom gets pissed when her son is killed in battle and his best friend returns unharmed, only to make a play for her son's new widow. The old woman is visited by a samurai in a demon mask who torments her and...
